See how community college is helping students across America identify their passions, set their own pace, and realize their full potential.

For Melanie, Armand, and Becca, community college has given them a way to keep moving forward, even when obstacles like indecision and illness crossed their paths. But lately, they’re feeling stagnant—and in order to choose a new direction, they need to see all the places their next steps can take them.

Come along as they cross the country to talk to people whose stories have been shaped by community college, ultimately finding the confidence to press onward and upward—all with the support of a newfound community.

If you’re a parent, teacher, or student looking for educational resources that will help you dive deeper into the topics and themes in this documentary, check out our viewing guide.

Community College Roadtrip

Not every success story starts with a four‐year degree. Community colleges are the breeding ground for big dreams—and we’re showing students how to make theirs a reality.

It’s often seen as the more favorable option; the only option, even. But with high costs, inflexible schedules, and tough requirements, four‐year college isn’t always within reach. That’s why we’re teaming up with ECMC Foundation to send three students on a cross‐country journey to discover how a community college education can be used as a launchpad to higher education, specialized skills—and more importantly, rewarding careers. Follow the journey below, then watch it on public television—and right here—when it premieres.

BECCA

Age 21
From Pittsburgh, PA

Community college was, admittedly, not Becca’s first choice of post‐secondary paths. But after an illness forced her to drop out of her four‐year university, Becca was thankful to find an option that continued to expose her to new things and fuel her love of learning: taking classes at her local community college. Now that she’s transferred to the University of Pittsburgh, she’s having difficulty picking a major—not because she doesn’t know what she likes, but because she likes too many different things! As of right now, she’s double‐majoring in communications and religious studies, with a minor in linguistics...but that could change at any minute. She hopes this road trip will show her that she doesn’t have to abandon one interest for another—that she can combine her love for culture, language, history, and beyond, into one fulfilling career.

ARMAND

Age 25
From Daly City, CA

Currently attending the City College of San Francisco and working an IT job, Armand has carved out a comfortable life for himself. But he’s starting to get wary of that comfort: he’s been living at home and attending community college classes for the past eight years, and he feels ready for a change. He’s drawn to the idea of moving into a career where he could help others more directly—but he’s not quite ready to take the leap into something new. A self‐proclaimed procrastinator, he knows this road trip could be the jolt he needs to restart his system, and help him answer the tough question he’s been facing: Should he stick to his well‐worn paths where he’s comfortable, or should he forge ahead into new territory?

MELANIE

Age 23
From Brooklyn, NY

Growing up in Brooklyn, Melanie was exposed to a lot in high school: violence, gangs, and drug use. But what she didn’t often see were role models or peers who were pursuing a post‐secondary education. So after graduating from high school, Melanie followed the neighborhood trend of going straight into the workforce, choosing to take food industry and retail jobs rather than continuing her schooling. But last year, something clicked: after developing strong interests in political engagement and activism, Melanie realized that if she wanted to make the kind of difference she dreamed of, she had to go back to school. Now enrolled in Queensborough Community College, she’s ready for this road trip to connect her with the kinds of role models she hopes to someday become for her own community.
