Messages from Family:
You should focus on science or math related career paths as you can earn more money than you can in the arts.
How I responded:
You can achieve success in any endeavor you choose. The key is defining what success means to you. I have learned this through life experiences and self-study. There are key attributes that all successful individuals possess: discipline, self-mastery, vision, and planning to name a few.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
College is expensive. I earned scholarships due to hard work and results in high school; however, I lost my scholarships through poor academic performance in my first year of college and subsequently had to fund on my own by working.
My father took a very active role in my development. Though I had put obstacles in my own way, I was determined to succeed and had the discipline to stay the course. I have passed these lessons and more to my children in order for them to succeed.
