About Shakira
- Growing up in Dominica, I studied relentlessly as there were few distractions—no malls or theaters, only academics.
- Initially, I pursued a career as a scientist, earning degrees in biology, microbiology, and chemistry to focus on cancer research.
- Passing the College of Nursing one day, I discovered I could blend research and patient interaction which changed my path.
- I boldly enrolled in an accelerated nursing program, earning a Bachelor of Nursing and a Master’s in Public Health simultaneously.
- My first role as a neonatal nurse showed me the depth of care and connection required, igniting my passion for patient-centered work.
- Determined to deepen my expertise, I pursued both a Ph.D. and Doctor of Nursing Practice, balancing dual doctoral studies.
- I became a leader in nursing education and health care, eventually serving as both the dean and chief nurse executive at UF Health.
