About Stephen
- I grew up in rural Mississippi and was raised by my single mother.
- While we weren’t poor, money was often tight, so I decided early on that I’d eventually go to college to study something that could lead to a job with good earning potential.
- In middle and high school, I was involved in a gifted program that really focused on creativity, which gave me an interest in developing products to better the lives of others.
- In alignment with my interest in product development, I studied mechanical engineering in college.
- I spent a few years working before going to Harvard Business School for my MBA.
- I eventually transitioned into economic development—I’ve worked as chief executive of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber and Louisiana Department of Economic Development.
- I’m now the president and CEO of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, where I work to increase economic opportunity and growth for the commonwealth of Virginia.
