My path in life has been direct
1.
I was born in rural England.
2.
My parents encouraged me to become a teacher, so I went to college and studied history with the goal of becoming a teacher.
3.
After college, I did some post-graduate work and got into educational publishing, which I realized I would enjoy better than teaching.
4.
As I developed my career in publishing, I moved from the United Kingdom to Sydney, Australia, before ultimately landing in New York.
5.
I’ve worked for a variety of companies but the through-line has always been publishing.
6.
In 2021, I was named president and CEO of Scholastic, an educational and children’s publishing company.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
You should become a teacher.
How I responded:
My parents encouraged me to become a teacher. They thought that was the best profession for me. I did go to college intending to follow that path but ended up getting into educational publishing. I enjoyed working on textbooks to facilitate teaching better than becoming a teacher myself, so I decided to keep pursuing the career that personally made me happy.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
Both of my parents left school before graduating and most of my family work in farming and agriculture. I was the first to go to college.
