If you believe in something, do not be afraid to give it a try but, in retrospect, be sure to plan, plan, plan!

Milestones

My road in life took a while to figure out.
Went to work for a Fortune 50 company in a sales job. I was in the computer industry at the advent of the personal computer. While in sales, I earned an MBA while working.
Later I got to work in corporate headquarters in marketing, often traveling to the Silicon Valley.
After eight years, I joined a small company in the same industry as a Vice President of Marketing.
We sold that company, as planned eight years later and I started my own company.
In the early days of my business, I began teaching at a local college on an adjunct basis.
When we were ready to sell our business, I realized how much I enjoyed teaching so I returned to school at age 50 to earn my doctorate in business.
I landed my current job and am in my 15th year teaching at the University of Mary Washington
I am not contemplating my next career move.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for everyone

It depends of which of my careers you want to pursue. A career in sales and marketing would suggest, to me, that one has a broad base of knowledge beyond their business curriculum. Learn business for sure but do not ignore the liberal arts. History, literature and the like help to round out your education and can enhance your creativity.

Recommended Education

My career is related to what I studied. I'd recommend the path I took:

undergrad
Bachelor
Business

Graduate
MBA

The Noise I Shed

From Myself:

"Starting your own business is risky. Going back to college at age 50 is a waste of time because there are not enough years to enjoy the benefits of the additional education.."
