I've taken a lot of twists and turns
1.
Studied German & had a hard year abroad in Germany. Don't want to use that, I thought!
2.
Decided I wanted to work in education, and signed up to teach students.
3.
Realized I get really frazzled in what we call "direct service" - working directly with people who really need me.
4.
Started doing work outside of my job description to develop skills in writing, design and communication, so I could help in a less direct way.
5.
Tried for a minute to work for a big fundraising office, and didn't like it! My place is with teams where I can know all of the players.
6.
Finally settled into working in writing and communications for small, "mission driven" teams, meaning they're focused on a single goal of helping people.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
I heard that skills like writing or designing led to job paths that were too competitive, and to find something more stable.
How I responded:
Now, both would have benefited me. I have caught up some by taking courses at my local community college. Given my major wasn't focused anyway -- I did general liberal arts subjects -- I wish I'd had the confidence to say, well, I'm going to study what I want and take the risk.
