Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for high school students

Get a few certifications like a CompTIA Security+ or Network+. They are a good foundation and will help you get a foot in the door. After entry level certs, try for a Cisco CCNA or SANS GIAC certification. Look for internships, even unpaid ones. Companies often hire interns that prove they have the drive and enthusiasm. Build a home lab, even if its just a single computer running virtualbox with a few different virtual machines. You can build domain controllers, and practice networking.
