For me, a great day at work is one that has a little bit of everything - a fast-pace keeps giving me the momentum I need to be the most productive since there is a fixed amount of time for each task before I have to switch hats. It will include some time where I problem-solve on my own - say, by building a financial model, and some time where I brainstorm with a team. It will also include meetings where I have to present and defend my views, as well as meetings where I get to learn something new.
Advice for Getting Started
Here's the first step for college students
Make sure you have a big-picture understanding of the industry and have thought about why you would like to pursue this career. It is equally important to demonstrate an ability to challenge yourself and work hard through your academic coursework and extracurricular activities.
