My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
Worked as a waiter/bartender full time through college. Parents could not help.
2.
Father got cancer so had to stop school and get another job to help with bills, mop floors 10pm-4am.
3.
Mopping floors at a hospital led to becoming a manager in the morning shift.
4.
Managing the Housekeeping department well, led to managing more departments.
5.
Got recruited to work for a management company managing different departments in hospitals.
6.
Did that extremely well but was miserable working 7 days a week and every holiday and weekend.
7.
Got recruited to a bank and started from the bottom again, worked way up to manager.
8.
Did the branch manager job well and then was asked to be a district manager and have been doing that well.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
You will never be successful because you are not rich enough, smart enough, tall enough or attractive enough...
How I responded:
At some point in my life, instead of the noise stopping me, it became what drove me. The more people said I could not do something, the harder I worked at making sure I did it the best. I obsessed at being so good at one thing that I became the expert and the go to person. Then, once I mastered one skill and then started to focus on another, I always offered to help others that had trouble and I made sure that I always stayed humble.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
Money: I stopped spending money on things I really didn't need. I focused on a strict budget and more importantly I saved. Even if it was $5, I still saved. I looked for sales [you can find a great suit for $100], you just have to look.
Always be aware of what's going on around you. When you see it coming make sure you walk in a different direction. Never draw attention to yourself and at some point learn to defend yourself, karate changed my life. Be smart and never be cocky.
Language is so important, do not take any short cuts in this area. Find similar people with your background that are going or have gone through what you are going through now. There are so many great language learning programs now, make sure you use them.
If someone you love has an addiction the most important thing you need to remember is that it's not you and not your fault. You always try to help but you need to know when to say when and focus back on you. Learn from it and make sure you don't follow.
