Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

What are you doing in the field of engineering? You are a woman who is taking up a valuable spot for a man!

  • How I responded:

DON'T ever listen to anyone but yourself! Find something you love and follow that path! Trust your gut...it is always right! Always!! Life is too short to have regrets. Although that experience made me leave the STEM field, I have used my engineering/math skills in my role as a technical adviser. Recognize transferable skills! I LOVE what I do! Practice positive messaging to yourself throughout your life. Use mindful practices such as yoga and meditation to quiet/dis-alarm the "noise".

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • As a beginning engineering student, I took a class in which I was the only woman. A group of men used that time to intimate me every day with VERY inappropriate gestures and comments. I dropped out of the program and changed my major.
