Milestones

My road in life took a while to figure out.
Wrote in my free time as a child and teenager.
Decided to become a writer as a junior in high school when my teacher told me I could do anything.
Majored in journalism instead of creative writing, because it was safe.
Took an internship at a national business magazine.
Was laid off from the magazine and wrote a novel.
Got an easy desk job so I could focus on writing.
Found a creative job that would fulfill me.
Wrote in my free time more than ever.

Day to Day

I work with clients to create well-designed advertisements or other projects, such as infographics, interactives, motion graphics, reports, and other radical things. I pitch concepts, I write content, I collaborate with others, manage designs, and sometimes I play ping-pong.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for high school students

I ended up in advertising when I wanted to be a writer. There are creative ad agencies out there where you will be unable to comprehend just how far out and wild you get to be. Just because you're in advertising doesn't mean you have to write boring copy, and just because you're a writer doesn't mean you can't get a cool day job. Find out what you want to do, pursue it, and then see what's out there for you. There's always something.
