Milestones

My road in life has been direct.
When I was growing up, I was convinced that I would eventually play for the NFL.
As I got older and learned more about the workforce, I knew that I wanted to work in a leadership position.
I started at Walmart as a cart pusher when I was 18 years old.
I didn’t want to keep working outside in the heat, so I reached out to my store manager who offered me a position as an unloader.
A few months later, I got the opportunity to become a department manager for the dairy department.

Day to Day

As a store manager, I play a lot of different roles. Sometimes I act as a therapist, sometimes I act as mom or dad, and sometimes I'll be that intense leader that my team needs. I help mitigate my associates' wants, needs, and personal development. On any given day, I'll deal with very upset or very happy customers. I also work with administrative things like profit loss statements.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for everyone

Go back to your roots. What is it from a basic standpoint that made you happy at your roots? Figure that out and then build up from there. That's what helped me decide that I wanted to be in a leadership position. I also strongly recommend finding a mentor in the field you're interested in. Mentors can be extremely valuable in helping you navigate the nuances of your career pathway.
