Skills & Education

Advice for getting started

When we moved to Texas and started building the largest Bitcoin data center in North America, most people told us we'd fail. We didn't really care what they had to say because we were having fun doing it. We did actually end up succeeding and building the largest data center, and we essentially got to create the gold standard on how to do so. Along the way, we cared about the journey, the experience we were having, and the impact we were creating in the community.

Here's the path I took:

Life & Career Milestones

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

I was raised by a single mother and learned early on that I had to work for anything I wanted.

  • 2.

I started mowing lawns to earn money and then learned to manage others mowing lawns for me.

  • 3.

That lawn mowing business eventually grew into a landscape construction company.

  • 4.

I learned about Bitcoin from my youngest son and started mining with him shortly after.

  • 5.

I quickly realized that Bitcoin was about infrastructure, power, scalability, and systems and procedures—things that I had centered my career around previously.

  • 6.

We moved from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Texas with the goal of developing a large-scale data center—in doing so, we realized we were helping to repair and reenergize the town’s industry.

  • 7.

Riot Blockchain acquired Whinstone, the data center, effectively bolstering our development as we built it into the largest Bitcoin mining facility in North America.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

You've lost your mind. You're never going to be successful. It's going to fail.
