You need to develop an eye and knowledge for how paper reacts in high speed motion. Deductive reasoning to understand how a problem in one part of a machine might have developed much earlier upstream. And it wouldn't hurt to familiarize yourself with the different voltages and current running through your machines, either.
Ambition. Start building and repairing everything you can get your hands on. If you break it worse, it can still be fixed. Really strive to understand how it works on a component level.
