About Doreen

  • As a first-generation college student, I entered college curious about people and passionate about helping others.
  • I studied English and philosophy as an undergraduate, learning how to think critically and communicate ideas that would shape my future work.
  • While preparing to attend law school, I realized my true passion was mental health and chose to pursue counseling instead.
  • Enrolling in a counseling program confirmed I was on the right path, and I went on to earn my Ph.D. in counseling psychology.
  • Early in my career, I taught students and worked with clients as a practicing psychologist, helping people navigate difficult moments in their lives.
  • Wanting to make a broader impact, I shifted my work toward national mental health efforts focused on suicide prevention.
  • I later joined the National Eating Disorders Association, working to help people recognize eating disorders and get connected to treatment sooner.
  • Today, as CEO of NEDA, I lead efforts to change how eating disorders are understood, recognized, and treated across the country.
