I see these young people, I see them giving me the side eye, and I think, ‘Yeah, I was that.’ I believe in them and I can see past that because I was there.
About Kathryn
- I earned my bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of North Carolina with plans to become an actuary.
- While training as an actuary at New York Life Insurance Company, I was approached by a woman to work in her organization’s computer science program which, at the time, had no Black women.
- I spent the next 20 years doing system development and IT.
- While working for Accenture and leading global teams, a pivotal conversation with my mother at 50 redirected my path towards teaching.
- I embraced my mother's advice and pursued education, earning master's degrees in education and middle grade mathematics.
- As a middle school math teacher, I became the ninth teacher in a single year for a challenging class, which only fueled my dedication to education.
- Transitioning from the classroom to coaching in a high school for adjudicated youth, I found deep fulfillment in making a tangible impact.
- My journey eventually led me to administrative roles, and now, as executive director of a nonprofit charter middle school, I aim to inspire change, rebuild reputation, and foster student success.
