My name's Kurt Sippel. I went to the university here in Madison, UW-Madison. And then I started a master's in urban regional planning cuz I didn't really know what the heck I was gonna do. I ended up working at the sister program in public policy. And I was originally hired as an economist, merging labor data from the state with stuff from the federal government and also from communities around the area. Part of that was I had to be good at IT, so I actually started an IT company. And what we focused on was small business and I grew that company for 20 years. IT has become so specialized and it's one of the few you really don't even have to have a degree to get into. And then, one thing about the industry is that every day is different. It's like solving a puzzle to me, right? So if you really get into puzzles and you're trying to figure something out and that's your jam, then this is a good industry for you.

Start by developing your own curiosity and aptitude for technology. Then start taking information technology classes. Finally, look for internships in the field. That's a great way to gain experience and figure out where you'd like to contribute.
