Hi, I'm Andrea Crawford. I'm a wind turbine technician. I was actually in my senior year shop class when I started learning about wind. Our teacher did a presentation, he was just showing pictures of a guy who had graduated a few years before me. That's when I reached out to the guy and I was like, hey, how'd you get into this? Like, what's it like? And he actually basically told me step by step what he did and I followed his footsteps. My summer right before my senior year my father passed away, from his own doing. So I knew I did not wanna end up like that, I did not wanna choose a career where I could take the possibility of me spiraling down. And not doing the best I could for myself and then from there I didn't know what I wanted to do. I knew I did not wanna go to college because I didn't wanna spend the money on that I didn't have the money to spend on that. And I knew I definitely couldn't sit there for that long. A lot of careers these days that everybody's not really going for takes a long time. So, I saw that wind and I found out that it was only seven months in a trade school and seven months went by super quick. And then I ended up right where I wanted and needed to be.

I highly recommend going to a trade school. My trade school program was only seven months long and significantly less expensive than a four-year college. My teachers were also very supportive, which made a world of difference in my learning. On top of that, the school helped us build resumes and prepare for job interviews, so I was able to find a job immediately after completing the program.

I'm stationary right now, so I go into the same office every day. Unless one of the towers is down or needs attention, I stay in the office getting caught up on work orders and maintaining the shop. Other wind turbine technicians can be travelers. They'll start their day in the office to pick up any supplies before heading out to the wind tower. They'll primarily work inside the tower but may also have to go up to the top of the tower to work.
