About Grant
- Grew up on a farm in a bad environment; his mother was depressed, suicidal; he knew he had to get away, "break the cycle."
- Worked for the railroad for a year to save up money, then bought two mules and rode from Colorado to Wyoming at age 19.
- He had $500 and a pack of food; lived on beans and pancakes, was constantly lonely, but considers it all "part of the journey."
- Knew he had to "live out his adventure" after watching his dad devote his life to a job he hated.
- Started out as a professional polo player, but people repeatedly told him that he had a unique bond with the horses.
- Began training horses through "horse whispering," extended his bond with horses into talks and demonstrations about trust, human relationships.
- Had his difficulties: sometimes felt bad about how he was treating the animals, wanted to quit; found a mentor that changed his mind.
- Says even after all these years, every time he steps into a pen with an unbroken horse, he's facing his fears.
