Life & Career Milestones
My path in life has been direct
1.
I’ve loved books from a very young age and got my first library card at age five.
2.
Growing up, I had a hard time making friends, so I found safety, belonging, and friendship in books and book characters.
3.
I never saw men or people of color behind the desk, so I struggled to imagine librarianship as a path for me.
4.
After being medically discharged from Army boot camp, I returned home feeling crushed and unsure of what came next.
5.
One day, I was sitting quietly in my local library and felt such peace and tranquility that I decided to ask how to work there, taking my first step into librarianship.
6.
I worked my way up from shelver to supervising librarian while balancing full-time school as I pursued my master’s degree in library and information science.
7.
While working as a supervising librarian, I struggled with burnout, family hardship, and a severe mental health crisis, and decided to leave the library.
8.
After leaving the library, I pushed through and found joy again as a resident librarian for PBS and PBS Kids.
Defining Moments
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
While working as a supervising librarian, burnout, family challenges, and mental health struggles led me to leave the library and nearly give up on life. I left the library and slowly found joy again—though my mental health is an ongoing struggle.
