My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
Went to a community college for two years and did not get an associate degree. Just needed to figure out what I wanted to do.
2.
Was in a car accident that was really bad and used a semester off to think about what I wanted to do. I knew if I took more than a semester off, then I would never go back to school.
3.
Went to a four-year college and still struggled to identify what I wanted to do.
4.
Finally figured out what I wanted to do and then committed to it.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
You aren't going to make enough money to support yourself, the parents are horrible to educators, the state testing is terrible, no one supports you, administration is oblivious, etc.
How I responded:
I decided that I still wanted to go out and make a difference and change the world for the better one student at a time. Yes, you hear this and sometimes also see it first-hand, but the joy you get when a student walks across the stage at graduation or the "thank you for saving my life or stepping in when I needed someone to not give up on me" moments you can't replace. I am happy without making a six-figure salary and can support myself. I wanted to make my own decision based upon my journey.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
My first teaching job was at a Title I school—majority of students are low-socioeconomic. I did not come from that upbringing and so finding commonalities of what my expectations.
