My path in life has been direct
1.
I graduated college with a business degree.
2.
I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do but I knew that I wanted to work hard, be part of a team, and feel stimulated by my environment.
3.
After what seemed like an endless job search, I finally landed my first job after college—it wasn’t a very rewarding job, but I took it upon myself to learn as much as I could while I was there.
4.
I left that job and sought assistance from a staffing agency that placed me at a small logistics firm where I quickly fell in love with logistics.
5.
While I knew I wanted to stay in the logistics industry, there wasn’t much growth opportunity at my company, so my supervisor recommended I pursue a position with C.H. Robinson, a much larger company.
6.
After a proactive phone conversation with a C.H. Robinson executive, I got a job at the C.H. Robinson office in Chicago, Illinois.
7.
I’ve been with C.H. Robinson for 14 years now and currently work as the director of sales in our Greenville, South Carolina office.
8.
In addition to my work as the director of sales, I sit on the board of a nonprofit organization that I meet with weekly to discuss how we can make a difference in the community.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Myself:
I'm a nobody in a big company with much more experienced people.
How I responded:
After just a year of experience in logistics, I moved to a much bigger company in a much busier city. I felt like a nobody compared to my more experienced colleagues. However, I took that as a challenge to work hard and make a name for myself. I also had a mentor that helped encourage me to be my best at work. No matter what level they're at, people are just people. So be yourself and don't be afraid to take a leap.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
My grandfather was my best friend and I lost him when I was young. That loss and pain shifted my mindset—I realized that people are just people. That realization has helped me be myself and take chances throughout my journey.
At times, people have felt like they needed to remind me that I'm Black in order to try and knock me down. I deal with those situations by staying true to who I am and reminding myself that my value is truly represented by my merit as an individual.
