Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Myself:
Neither of my parents were high school graduates, and I wasn't confident I was capable of completing a college degree. Then a near-fatal illness had me hospitalized, resulting in loss of an entire semester of my freshman year of college.
How I responded:
I spent a semester convalescing, reading books to pass the time, and that opened my eyes to the humanities; the reading impacted me so much that I switched my major from pre-med to English, ultimately earning a BA and entering the teaching profession at a high school.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
My parents did not graduate high school, but I knew education was important and was determined to pursue it. Through perseverance, I achieved many educational milestones and am currently in a doctorate program at USC.
