Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Teachers:

In high school, I placed way too much pressure on myself to get straight "A"s. One of my teachers said, "You must realize that there will always be someone smarter than you....but hard work and passion are always within your control."

  • How I responded:

Recognize your weaknesses, but embrace your talents and know that work ethic, passion, authenticity and compassion are all within your control. Recognize that leading with kindness, compassion, integrity and character will draw people to you. Someone is always watching and emulating you. Recognize that leadership is not given—it is earned through how you uplift, support and empower those around you.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I was closeted for many years. I deeply regret that I didn't have the courage to be my authentic self. A great mentor said, "If you are not leading and comfortable in your own skin, how do you expect others to be." That inspired me to lead openly.
