Skills & Qualities Beyond School

The ability to build relationships and understand what is important to people is a critical skill for long term success as an auditor in public accounting. This is not a prerequisite, but rather a skill that you can develop overtime. I would recommend identifying a mentor, or multiple, early on in your career that you believe can help you grow and develop this skillset as you progress through your career.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for college students

Connect with people in the industry to ensure you fully understand the profession. I would start with family and friends or, if you do not have any family or friends in the industry, reach out to a counselor at your college to help get you connected to someone in the industry. It is an important decision and I believe there is value in learning as much as you can before you start the recruiting process.
