Life & Career Milestones

I've taken a lot of twists and turns

  • 1.

Being asked to join a band when I was a freshman in high school. All the guys were older and were great mentors.

  • 2.

Hearing my band perform my songs for the first time. I was highly motivated to continue writing and performing.

  • 3.

Traveling, touring, meeting musicians from all over the world.

  • 4.

Getting sober in 1988. Walking away from the "party" life of a working musician.

  • 5.

Going back to school as an adult. It was frustrating but completely exhilarating. I didn't know how hungry I was to learn about my craft, to study, to share knowledge with others, to be teachable.

  • 6.

Moving to Hawaii and taking a one year sabbatical. Giving myself a year of rest and study.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Parents:

You can't make a living as a musician.

  • How I responded:

I didn't listen to others. I had to carve my own path. And it wasn't easy. But through all the discouragement and economic hardship, I KNEW what I wanted to do and enjoyed doing it. So I just never quit. I've had many jobs over the years to support my creative efforts. I've always been willing to do whatever it took to succeed in my chosen profession.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • Years of alcohol and drug addiction. However, I have been sober since 1988.

  • I've been on the verge of bankruptcy many times in my life. I've also had years where my income was in the six figure bracket. Money comes and money goes. Be diligent and plan ahead to overcome the lean years.
