Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

People in my socioeconomic background generally did not graduate college and if they did, they did not attain careers in their field. My father harvested corn as a child in Mexico and reads at a 3rd grade level. I learned English in 4th grade.

  • How I responded:

Although my story sounds a bit wild, it's actually true! My parents moved from Mexico to Chicago and my father found jobs wherever he could while my mom took care of four kids. Many people do not know about this to this day, not because I am ashamed but because I never allowed this to interfere with my belief that I could do anything I set my mind to. I saw my socioeconomic background as an opportunity to change the stats through hard work & determination, so don't be intimidated by the stats!

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • Growing up, we lived in small cramped apartments and usually wore hand-me-downs from other families we knew or bought our clothing/shoes from the thrift store. I knew early on that the only way to overcome financial struggles was through college.
