Making the move to New York was a big step.

  • 3.

I joined Arthur Andersen after graduating from Baruch College.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

People said that I’d be working long hours. I also heard discouraging remarks about how tough it was for women to make partner, and especially a diverse woman like me. People asked me why I’d want to go down that path. And still today, I hear it.

  • How I responded:

No matter what criticism I heard, I knew that for me to succeed I had to be determined and have the conviction that I really wanted to do this – that I could do this. After that, it was a matter of putting in the hard work. So, that’s what I did.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I came to New York from the Caribbean to attend college. It was a huge culture shock. I mitigated that by finding communities beyond my family where I could find commonalities. At my college, I joined affinity groups for women, accounting, and more.
