My path in life has been direct
1.

2.
Making the move to New York was a big step.
3.
I joined Arthur Andersen after graduating from Baruch College.
4.
At the collapse of Enron and, as a result, Arthur Andersen, I had to decide whether to continue in professional services or go into industry, which some of my friends and peers did.
5.
I made the decision to join EY in 2002.
6.
At EY, I made the decision to pursue partnership, thanks to the support and encouragement of mentors.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
People said that I’d be working long hours. I also heard discouraging remarks about how tough it was for women to make partner, and especially a diverse woman like me. People asked me why I’d want to go down that path. And still today, I hear it.
How I responded:
No matter what criticism I heard, I knew that for me to succeed I had to be determined and have the conviction that I really wanted to do this – that I could do this. After that, it was a matter of putting in the hard work. So, that’s what I did.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I came to New York from the Caribbean to attend college. It was a huge culture shock. I mitigated that by finding communities beyond my family where I could find commonalities. At my college, I joined affinity groups for women, accounting, and more.
