My path in life has been direct
1.
My father, who was an Air Force officer, passed away when I was only 9 years old.
2.
My mother moved our family to California to be near her parents. She did a great job raising us.
3.
We did not have a lot of money, but CSUF tuition was low, I could live at home, and had some financial help from the Veterans Administration.
4.
I did well scholastically at CSUF and was hired by one of the large public accounting firms, which is an excellent place to start a professional career.
5.
I worked for Deloitte for 10 years and greatly enjoyed it, but I did not feel I had the outgoing character and selling skills needed to become a partner.
6.
A former Deloitte partner who was a Chief Financial Officer at Armor All Products hired me as his Controller. It was a great job, but ended when Clorox bought Armor All !
7.
I searched for a few months and was hired as Controller at GT Bicycles, but that job ended when Schwinn bought GT !
8.
Another former Deloitte partner hired me as Assistant Controller at Bergen Brunswig, which later merged with another company to become AmerisourceBergen.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
Accounting and auditing are boring. You're just dealing with numbers and not the real business
How I responded:
Accounting and auditing are not boring if you take the profession seriously. Accounting is the art of tracking the Company's finances and explaining them to management/investors in the manner of a story. You need to understand the business in order to categorize and present these numbers. By doing so, you uncover the areas in which the Company is doing well and in which areas it needs improvement. That is an important role in helping the leadership team run the Company.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I've always been introverted. That can lead to a tendency to just sit back and do the work independently, and not get others involved. So I have had to make an effort to reach out; joining a group, taking the lead on a project, giving a presentation
