  • 1.

Fell in love with my Political Science course in high school.

  • 2.

Hospitalized the day of high school graduation for several weeks and had multi-year lasting negative effects. Moved to a new city with no friends or support due to illness.

  • 3.

Found a community college to attend after high school nearby.

  • 4.

Transferred to 4 year college to major in Political Science.

  • 5.

Graduated with bachelors in 4 years but hated 1st job out of college and felt extremely lost.

  • 6.

Family friend referred me to an alternative teaching program that required me to start my Masters.

  • 7.

Loved teaching and led to a referral for a counseling job.

  • 8.

Counseling job has since turned into other licenses that allow me to work outside of school in different capacities.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Family:

How is that degree (Political Science) or those clases going to help you?

  • How I responded:

In reality, what I chose to major in was inspired by a high school teacher. The coursework was immensely interesting but it did set me on course that developed elements of myself that came to alienate from certain parts/ members of my family. Educating myself did give me skills and made topics of conversation that I found engaging different than my family. In the end, it very much helped me but not in way my family could understand first hand or at the time.
