How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
In my 20's and early 30's, I worked hard to be taken seriously in my field yet some professionals made disparaging remarks about my age, equating it to lack of experience and understanding. At the time, this made me question whether I was truly an expert.
How I responded:
I asked myself, "At what age will my opinion begin to matter?" "Who has to give me their approval in order for me to know I'm skilled at what I do?" Once I asked myself these questions, I realized looking for validation from others is an endless, meaningless task. Getting my own approval was much more empowering. Today, I don't question my expertise because of my age - I celebrate the fact that at my age, I have this expertise and have accomplished so much already!
