How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
Being a woman in this field will be difficult; you will have a hard time earning respect. The construction industry is male dominated and your young age will also create challenges for you.
How I responded:
Above all, let your work ethic speak for itself. Create relationships and surround yourself with people you admire and trust, and have an interest in your own development. Everyone has something valuable they can bring to the table, regardless of gender or age, so do not sell yourself short. Be involved, and know the issues facing your industry or clients; come to the table with solutions. Always be willing to learn - learn from others and from your own mistakes.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I knew that my studies and connections in college would position me for life after school. My grades granted me academic scholarships to lessen the financial burden on my parents. I also joined business organizations to grow my network & find mentors
