Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

"That would be a great hobby, but it's not a career path" or "How will you make money, if you run a non-profit?". I also heard "It's too hard to start a non-profit, it will never succeed." I still love proving them wrong.

  • How I responded:

People were almost sympathetic towards me that I had this vision. It was as if they patted me on the back and said, "Aw, that's cute you have this idea". My vision was so clear to me though, that this didn't distract me. Have a goal, and a flexible plan. If your goal stays consistent, whatever road bumps that may appear will be easily conquered. Don't let bureaucracy scare you, but take the chance to learn from it. People are people, no matter their title. Be vulnerable and confident all at once

  • This is typical in the nonprofit world. We are fortunate to have secured funding from the school district, but that's just one of our outlets. Our donor base is not our demographic, and that's where we spend our energy.
