My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
Took on an internship to see if I enjoyed the field.
2.
Accepted an offer to join my 1st company before Senior year so I could forego the job search stress.
3.
Left my first company voluntarily when it became apparent that they were in financial trouble.
4.
Sought out a mentor at my 2nd company that I am still in touch with 15+ years later.
5.
Took on a new role outside of my comfort zone.
6.
Built and maintained a network of peers and mentors that I could seek out for advice.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
You're never going to get into a good college if you go to that inner city public high school
How I responded:
Do not let where you come from determine where you are going!
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
Without financial aid, grants, scholarships and something called the Equal Opportunity Fund, I would not have been able to afford college. Do your research on the multitude of options that you have available to you!
Growing up, violence & gangs were common occurrences in my city. It would have been easy for me to participate in these things, but I always tried to be aware of what the long term impact of a stupid short term decision would have been.
I did not have anyone at home to discuss college options or the challenges of college once I got there. I sought out 2 of my high school teachers to help me navigate this new landscape.
