Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

You are from Africa, you should go study nursing, you won't get into Deloitte no matter how smart you are.

  • How I responded:

I found my passion, listened to myself and no one else and made up my mind to prove them wrong. These negative noises made me who I am TODAY.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I was raised by a single mom who had to work multiple jobs to make ends meet and to take care of my sister and I. I applied for financial aid and got some scholarships. I applied for every scholarship I came across.

  • The pressure was on me as the first in my family to go to college, I had to show and convince my family that going to college was a great choice.
