THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
I was the smartest of three boys and my parents thought I should be a lawyer. My music was thought of as a hobby, not a career.
How I responded:
I just kept doing what I wanted to do and it helped that my grades were good in college. When I got a summer job as an electrician at the (then) NY Shakespeare Festival, also called The Public Theatre, two good things happened: my father could read about the Festival in the paper thereby giving it validity and I found sound design. Until that summer, I had no idea about a career in theatre sound and what I had been studying seemed to have led me to this career.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I had to find my own way as my parents had no idea. I started at the community college in my hometown where I lived. It was a good way to learn what college is about.
Oy! I was a mess in high school. I went from a straight A student to Cs and Ds. It wasn't fun being closeted and fat.
