Life & Career Milestones

My path in life took a while to figure out

  • 1.

I didn't think about human services at first, but I tried a couple classes, and liked it.

  • 2.

Then I continued with the field and grew into liking it more.

  • 3.

Continued into going to my Bachelor's, and learned even more.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

Why? That's disgusting. Don't do that." "That's hard, and it's only a job with headaches in involved." "You're not going to make a lot of money in that field.

  • How I responded:

Regardless of the negative comments, I did it because I followed what I believed in and did it because I love to help people. It made me happy seeing other people happy, which is a bigger reward to me than doing it for the money. I followed my heart and listened to myself when no one listened to me. I surrounded myself with people who had the same thinking as I did. Surrounding myself with people that were like me, made me happier and opened more doors for me.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • My family didn't have much money for me to go to college. There are resources to help with that. If you don't know, ask around. Ask as many questions as you can no matter what it is.

  • It was hard being the first to go to college. No one had prior knowledge in going through the same classes I did and the the same schools. It was hard, but I took it one day at a time, worked smart, and took care of myself.

  • I knew I was "different" when I was younger. I didn't accept who I was until I got into college. I accepted myself more when I joined different organizations on campus as well as a LGBT one. They really helped who I was as a person. Reach out!
