Construction Business Owner
I do new construction and re-models.
I do all of my own work from start to finish. I do all aspects of construction, from structural to infrastructure to finish work. Some days I do 2 different trades, like electrical and plumbing and I usually am never doing the same thing from one week to the next. A great day is when I am able to take my time and make everything look and work correctly. At the same time, I enjoy getting a lot done in a day.
I didn't go to school to learn my professions. It came through trial and error and on site work. I can see how things need to be built in my mind, without being taught or ever having done it before. I can see what comes next and how to get from a to z. I pay in-depth attention to anything mechanical and I automatically understand how things work. I single-handedly built my own custom home from the ground up, without cracking a book. I get complimented on the design and quality frequently.
Here's the first step for high school students
Get a job working in construction. While you need a degree, hands on experience is much more valuable.
"College is too hard"
Don't throw it away because the odds are not in your favor. If the technology that was out there today would have been around when I was in school, I think I would have been able to pursue my larger dreams. Find out what's out there to make it happen.
I decided I was going to give myself enough time to learn what I needed to.
My family did not value college, so I had to break out of that mold and mindset. It's hard to press on, when your parents are not encouraging you.
