Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Teachers:
College is too expensive and you cannot go. Instead you should do people's hair, you are good at styling your own.
How I responded:
I overcame my noise by putting my foot down and saying I want to go to college. I continued to get good grades in high school and I applied to different colleges although I had no idea how to pay for tuition. I entered creative writing contests and won a couple of them. I ended up getting a scholarship. I prayed a lot to God because I did not think it was possible for me to get a scholarship, but it happened.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
Choosing to put school first and saying no to the peer pressure of using drugs or hanging out.
