Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

You should learn a trade. College is not for you.

  • How I responded:

I almost listened to this person. In fact, I dropped out of college and tried to join the Air Force. This didn't work out, so I went back to school and just kept at it. I was determined to make school work for me. I never thought I would graduate with my undergrad, let alone summa cum laude with my masters degree. Don't listen to those who tell you that you can't do something. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND TO. You have to believe in yourself and just block out all the noise.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • My mother made too much money for me to qualify for grants. Yet, she really didn't make enough to pay the bills and send me to school. I had to take out loans.
