I've taken a lot of twists and turns
1.
Raised in a rural area & education was not important to my parents especially for a girl; married.
2.
Went to college 1 class at a time then enrolled in an accelerated BS prog. Grad 30 yrs after H.S.
3.
Worked in many different types of places; health care, HR, financial, computer training & support.
4.
Volunteered at a H.S. Career Center & one of their counselors told me to get a M.Ed in counseling.
5.
I got the M.Ed. and even got hired at an Adult Education school.
6.
At age 60 I was hired at a community college and when I retire next year I'll be 76!
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
You should not go to college because you're a girl and girls get married and the man will take care of you!! After I did go to college & graduate, when I wanted to go to a Masters program, everyone said I was crazy to go back to school - I was too old!!
How I responded:
It comes down to believing in yourself and NOT listening to others. It doesn't do any good to argue with them though; just do what you think is right and keep moving in the direction you want to go. That may seem simplistic, but it is not! Do your own research, check out resources, whether it is financial aid or help from your empoyer with tuition there are ways you can get where you want to be!
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
When I first went to college it was one class at a time so I could pay for that. When I got into the accelerated B.S. program, my work paid part of my tuition and I borrowed the rest. I borrowed the money for the M.Ed. & paid it off in 12 yrs. :)
This was probably the hardest of all! My parents were adamant that I not go to college. So I moved out, got a job, married, had 3 kids & went to school 1 class at a time. I'm still married & I didn't tell my parents about my M.Ed. program!
