Joined some costume hobby groups.
Dropped out of fashion school.
Took a year of random trade school classes.
Moved to Los Angeles.
Took the plunge into freelance.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for college students

You have a long summer, use it! There are many colleges that offer Summer Rep programs. Go do one and get a crash course in life in the theater.
