Day In The Life Of A Policy Director

My Day to Day

I start my days by scanning the policy landscape, as headlines are changing daily. I'll check in with our grantees, who do a lot of the policy education work in State houses or on Capitol Hill. I turn community stories into tools for change, writing, speaking, and advising on policies in higher ed and workforce development. My job is about connecting lived experience with legislation that actually serves people.

  • Associate's Degree

Life & Career Milestones

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

As the first in my family to attend college, I started out at a community college in California, unsure of what was possible.

  • 2.

While in community college, I worked at City Hall and thought I’d become a city manager—that was my original career goal.

  • 3.

A scholarship brought me to East Texas A&M, where I discovered a passion for working in higher education.

  • 4.

My first job after college was as a hall director, which deepened my commitment to helping students navigate college.

  • 5.

While earning my master’s degree, I worked in Dallas inner-city schools, helping K-12 students see college as an option.

  • 6.

I transitioned from working directly with students to shaping higher ed policy at the state and federal levels.

  • 7.

Despite never working in government, I now use my lived experience to influence policy and advocate for equitable access to education.

Defining Moments

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • None of my parents or siblings went to college before me. I wanted to pursue education but expected it to be a struggle both financially and as the first in my family to navigate the experience. The Pell Grant is what enabled me to go to college.

  • I'm a policy director but I've never worked for a federal agency or on the Hill before, so I often feel like an imposter. I lean on my college experiences in student government and community volunteering to help alleviate that imposter syndrome.
