Life & Career Milestones

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

I followed my eighth-grade teacher's advice and pursued math and computer science in college—however, I didn’t officially earn my degree before I started working.

  • 2.

After being told I needed a degree to earn a promotion, I went back to school and finished my bachelor's in management.

  • 3.

I built my career across telecommunications, banking, retail, nonprofits, government, and manufacturing, learning something from every role.

  • 4.

I earned my master's in organizational leadership because I wanted to become the kind of leader others could count on.

  • 5.

I kept moving forward after losing a job and going through breast cancer treatment, trusting that a new opportunity would come.

  • 6.

A dare pushed me to apply for an IT role at Amplify, where I joined as a junior infrastructure engineer.

  • 7.

I grew into an IT operations and service manager by leading with empathy, supporting my team, and helping others succeed.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Peers:

No, you can't do it because you're from Mississippi. No, you can't do it because you're a woman in IT.

  • How I responded:

Throughout my journey, people have told me no for all kinds of reasons but I refused to let those labels define me. I've even told myself no. I almost talked myself out of applying for a role that changed my career. Every challenge became another reason to keep learning, keep growing, and prove to myself what I was capable of. People will tell you no but you just need to keep moving forward.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • After leaving a job for what I thought was a dream opportunity, I was fired on my seventh day for not being a good fit. I really struggled with that but I realized later that it was actually for the best for my life and health at the time.

  • I was diagnosed with breast cancer around the time that COVID was happening. Looking back, it's actually fortunate that I lost my job and then found a remote job because I was able to stay home and work while going through my cancer treatments.
