Advice for getting started
There are multiple paths to becoming an executive director of an organization. I'd recommend an undergraduate degree and experience in the nonprofit sector. I'd also recommend a graduate degree in organizational leadership or MBA.

My path in life has been direct
1.
I grew up in Salinas, California, and was the son of farmworkers.
2.
I wasn’t a great student throughout secondary school but I really flourished in college—I realized that I liked to learn and do research.
3.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in social behavioral sciences from California State University, Monterey Bay.
4.
After graduating, I started my career in public service doing outreach work and providing services to the community I came from.
5.
I’ve since built my career in public service.
6.
I currently serve as the executive director for Building Skills Partnership, which helps to improve the quality of life for property service workers and their families.
