Advice for getting started
The key is to start with a passion for teaching and education. That needs to be your foundation. If you want to get more into advocacy work, then the more specialized you can become in what you know, the better equipped you are to serve families. Make sure that service is something you really are interested in before starting in a career in education or advocacy.

Life & Career Milestones
My path in life has been direct
1.
I’ve always loved school and learning, and knew from a young age that I wanted to become a teacher.
2.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in political science followed by a Master’s of Education in Inclusive Special Education.
3.
I built my career as a special education teacher and administrator.
4.
I spent ten years working directly in schools but decided it was time to apply my skills in a different way after dealing with the struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic.
5.
I joined EdNavigator and currently work as a navigator for pediatric partnerships, where I get direct referrals from pediatricians to work with families with special education concerns.
Defining Moments
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
As a first-generation American, my mom wasn't involved in my schooling because there weren't meaningful opportunities for her to be involved. Schools didn't make an effort to communicate in Spanish or find ways to involve families like mine.
