Advice for getting started

When I inquired about college scholarships during my senior year of high school, my guidance counselor was surprised that someone like me wanted to go. I knew in that moment that the people around me underestimated me and that I would have to take control of my own learning journey.

Here's the path I took:

Life & Career Milestones

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

    I grew up in rural upstate New York in a log cabin my father built on a mountain.

  • 2.

    In college, I studied to become a teacher.

  • 3.

    I started my career as a high school and university computer science teacher.

  • 4.

    10 years later, I decided to go back to school and earn my Ph.D. in computer science and cognitive psychology.

  • 5.

    After graduating, I joined the New York City Foundation for Computer Science Education, where I worked to expand access to computer science for public school students.

  • 6.

    I went on to co-found CSforALL, a nonprofit organization focused on making computer science an integral part of K-12 education in the U.S.
