Day In The Life Of A Surgery Team Lead Nurse

My Day to Day

As a team lead and circulating nurse in the OR, I make sure surgeries run smoothly—from prepping the room to advocating for patients while they’re under anesthesia. I support the surgical team, coordinate equipment and staffing, and still jump in hands-on when needed. It’s fast-paced, emotional, and deeply rewarding.

Skills & Education

Here's the path I took:

  • High School

  • Bachelor's Degree

    Business Administration and Management

    University of South Florida

  • Associate's Degree

    Registered Nurse

    Florida State College at Jacksonville

Life & Career Milestones

I've taken a lot of twists and turns

  • 1.

After high school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I started by earning my associate degree and then eventually my bachelor’s in business administration.

  • 2.

I spent over a decade in health insurance, climbing from customer service representative to provider relations manager, where I first connected with the medical world.

  • 3.

I transitioned into teaching—primarily first grade—and taught for eight years, but still felt something was missing.

  • 4.

While teaching full-time and raising my kids, I began taking nursing school prerequisites during evenings and weekends.

  • 5.

I worked as a home health care coordinator while finishing my prerequisites—interacting with patients reaffirmed my calling to become a nurse.

  • 6.

Despite setbacks like COVID disrupting my clinicals, I completed nursing school while working full time and caring for my family.

  • 7.

I joined the Mayo Clinic’s perioperative program, finally stepping into a clinical role that aligned with my purpose and passion.

  • 8.

I became a team lead for general and transplant surgery, drawing on my past careers to mentor new nurses and advocate for patients in the OR.
