Life & Career Milestones
My path in life has been direct
1.
It took me a while to finish college as I worked full-time and tried to find my niche— I ultimately decided on mathematics and finished my degree in eight years.
2.
After earning my degree in mathematics, I started my career as a middle school math teacher.
3.
I found a lot of opportunities within the Clark County School District in Nevada—I worked as a training teacher, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, and chief technology officer.
4.
I then got the opportunity to go to New York and work for the state’s Department of Education as the senior deputy commissioner for education.
5.
I spent three years doing that before coming back home to Nevada to serve as the superintendent of public instruction.
6.
I still love being in the classroom and will occasionally take on teaching opportunities in addition to my role as superintendent of public instruction.
Defining Moments
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I supported myself through college by working full-time. However, you're expected to quit your job to student teach. My car also broke down at that time. It was a struggle but I did what I had to, including riding my bike to my student teaching job.
